Aikido - Japanese martial art

Aikido is a non-competitive Japanese martial art based on ancient sword and jujutsu systems. The fruit of a long physical and spiritual search by its founder, Morihei Ueshiba, it teaches counter techniques based on joint manipulations, throws, and pins.

The goal of Aikido is not to hurt or humiliate one’s adversary (even if the techniques permit this), but rather to take control of his/her attack without causing injury. Behind the practical technique of Aikido lies a philosophy founded on respect for people. Honesty, frankness, respect, and the concentration of effort which  Aikidoka put into their regular practice must appear equally in daily life.

Studying Aikido does not require taking courses in philosophy – rather, through arduous and sometimes frustrating physical techniques one gradually grasps a better understanding of the discipline.
